The show was controversial for its time, dealing openly with the topics of homosexuality, marital infidelity, impotence, interracial marriage, and gay parenting. Soap was among the earliest American primetime series to include a regular gay character (Jodie Dallas). Soap is commonly cited as the first series to do this.
