Season 2 » Episode #05 - The Red-Headed League

Sherlock Holmes (UK) - 02x05 The Red-Headed League
Summary: Jabez Wilson's attention is drawn to an advertisement in the newspaper by his assistant, Vincent Spaulding. The advertisement is for a position with The League of Red Headed Men, and offers a good salary for very little work. The only qualification is that applicants must have red hair. Encouraged by Spaulding, Wilson goes for an interview and secures the job, a position which takes him away from his own business for several days during the week and which involves nothing more arduous than copying out excerpts from the Encyclopaedia Britannica. When the position abruptly comes to an end, Jabez Wilson is puzzled enough to seek the services of Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Holmes suspects foul play is at the back of it, and believes that his old foe, Professor Moriarty may be the instigator of a cunning plan.

Episode Quotes

Sherlock Holmes: Hm!
Dr. John Watson: [entering] Oh. Sorry, Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes: No no. You couldn't have come at a better time.
Dr. John Watson: Well, I was, I was afraid you were engaged.
Sherlock Holmes: I am. Very much so.
Sherlock Holmes: Watson, we are spies in an enemy's territory.
Vincent Spaulding: I beg you to take your filthy hands off me! You may not be aware that I have royal blood in my veins. And be so kind as to say "sir" and "please" when you address me.
Athelney Jones: All right. Would you please, sir, mind marching upstairs where we'll get a cab to transport your highness to the police station?
Vincent Spaulding: That's better. Gentlemen.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (continuity error): After Jabez Wilson tells Holmes of his situation, Dr. Watson shows Wilson out and shuts the door after him. Holmes then muses on Wilson's case with Watson sitting opposite him. The scene cuts to Prof. Moriarty for a moment. We then return to Holmes and Watson who both hurry out of Holmes's apartment through the front door, which is now wide open.
