This show featured a TV commercial spoof that became a true classic. Gilda Radner introduces Autumn Fizz, "the world's first carbonated douche".
This is the second episode this season to feature "The Dead String Quartet" as the cold opening
Gerald Ford (I) was the first US president to appear on the show and is the only US president to open the show with "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night". Ford appeared as a favor to host Ron Nessen, his press secretary. But reportedly, Ford was not happy with Nessen performing in the raunchy skits in this episode.
The show was done during a technical strike, which accounts for the particularly stilted camera work. Also, due to the strike, Toni Basil and the Muppets were bumped. Don Pardo still mentions Jerry Nelson (I), Frank Oz, Richard Hunt (I) and Jim Henson (I) during the end credits.
Originally scheduled to appear on the premiere episode, Billy Crystal (credited as Bill Crystal) finally gets to perform on this show. He would later join the cast in 1984.
