- An episode scheduled for November 9, 2007 was canceled due to the 2007 Writers Strike. The scheduled guests were Ben Affleck, George Carlin, and Tom Brokaw.
- Maher originally wanted the series to be titled "True Dat" but HBO rejected it. Maher settled for "Real Time" but does not like the title.
- Bill Maher receives a standing ovation from the attendees in the audience every time he walks on stage to start an episode. As tonight's panel walked on stage off camera the crowd slowly rose to their feet and gave a standing ovation as Michael Moore walked on stage. No other guest on the show has received a standing ovation from the audience.
- As of 2007, this is the only episode of the show that was not broadcast live. It is also the only episode not to be taped in the show's Los Angeles studio. It was taped in Washington, D.C.
- This was the first episode to have only two guests on the panel instead of the usual three. Bill Maher stated that the reason was the show "ran out of money".
- The first few seconds of Maher's monologue were inaudible due to technical difficulties with his clip-on microphone. Maher had to perform his monologue using a hand-held mic handed to him by a stagehand.
- This episode garnered publicity when several members of the "9/11 Truth Movement" began protesting during the show. After several interruptions, Maher went into the audience and helped eject the protestors from the studio.
- This was the first episode not to have an opening monologue.
