The theme song of the series, "I Know, You Know", is performed by The Friendly Indians, the band of series creator, Steve Franks (I).
Kirsten Nelson (I) was pregnant in real life when she auditioned for her role as Interim Chief Karen Vick. During the first few episodes, she gave birth; from that time on she had to wear a fake pregnant stomach for the remainder of her character's pregnant period, to compensate for her diminishing belly.

When Shawn visits Chief Vick in the maternity ward, he tells her that she needs to take some time off from work and says, "Come back in January." This episode of "Psych" was the last episode to air during the summer of the first season; the next new episode was aired, in fact, the next January.
Many of the character names are taken from the "Batman" comic book series: Dent (Harvey Dent, a.k.a Two-Face), Talia (Talia al-Ghul), Leslie (Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Batman's personal physician), Malone (Matches Malone, a mob boss once impersonated by Batman), and Breyfogle (Norm Breyfogle, an artist who has worked on several "Batman" projects).
When Shawn rips the Missing Person poster off of the bulletin board, you can see a sign behind it which says, "WANTED: Collector Comic 'The Green Spirit Strikes Again' Looking for first printing. Must be in near mint condition. Money no object. Call Shawn at 555-0127". There is also a picture of the cover of the comic book as well. This is a reference to the previous episode, "Shawn vs. The Red Phantom," in which Shawn rips the cover off of Gus' copy of this comic book in which Gus replies with, "You're buying me another one! First printing!"

While on her speed date with Shawn, Glenda says she used to have a pet goat named Cassie. This is a reference to "Stargate SG-1" (1997) on which Teryl Rothery was a regular as Dr. Janet Frasier. Dr. Frasier had an adopted daughter named Cassie.
When Shawn is trying to convince Karen to have the SBPD pay for his speed date, he suggests that they should split the price. This is known as "going Dutch." However, Shawn says "going Deutsch" This is a callback to the Psych-Out from "Weekend Warriors" in which Shawn incorrectly pronounces "dutchies" as "deutschies."
The writer of this episode Andy Berman makes a cameo at the end of the episode as the guy that Shawn interrupts at the speed dating event who is talking to his date about having been in an avalanche, and having to drink his own urine and eat three of his toes to survive.
The missing tennis player character is named Deanna Sirtis, an obvious play on Marina Sirtis, who played Deanna Troi In "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987).
This was the last episode filmed in the first season.
There is some truth behind Gus' self-proclaimed poker skills. Dulé Hill, who plays Gus, appeared on "Celebrity Poker Showdown" (2003) in both the second season and the seventh season. He won both times.
Shawn tells the sorority girls that Gus played Kenny in "The Cosby Show" (1984). Dulé Hill never played Kenny, but did have a part in She's All That (1999). His character in that film was parodied in Not Another Teen Movie (2001) by Deon Richmond, who did play Kenny in ‘The Cosby Show’.
After Shawn and Gus's terrible audition, Lester Beacon questions Nigel's decision to pass them on to the next round, telling him, "We all saw what happened with that Indian kid on the other show." This is a reference to Sanjaya Malakar, a contestant from season six of American Idol, who advanced to the final round and drew a large base of fans but was widely criticized for his limited vocal abilities.
The name Zapato Dulce means "Sweet Shoe" in Spanish.
David Bowie (I) was considered for the role of Nigel St. Nigel.
When Emilina Saffron utters the line: "Come on, Count Chocula, I know you're in there! Don't make me pee on something! Again!" it gives the writers another chance to indulge their love of pop culture references. Count Chocula is the mascot for a breakfast cereal that contains chocolate-flavored corn cereal bits and marshmallows. Incidentally, in an episode of the cartoon "Robot Chicken" (2005), Count Chocula is seen as a judge in an American Idol spoof called Zombie Idol in which he substituted for the role of Simon Cowell.
When digging holes in search of the dinosaur, Shawn mentions "that this is like that movie with Sigourney Weaver," and Gus cannot guess the movie. 'Dulè Hill' actually was in this movie, Holes (2003), as Sam.
In this episode, Shawn makes a reference to the movie Holes (2003) which Gus fails to catch. 'Dule Hill', who plays Gus, had a starring role in 'Holes'.
