Phil Diffy is the oldest child in a normal family. His sister, Pim is an often devious girl with an unusual vocal talent, his mother has a robotic body, and his father spends all of his time working on their broken time machine. So, Phil would be normal if he was in his own time, 2121. Until then, the Diffys are stuck in 2004 and trying to fit in.

In the original show concept Barbara Diffy was going to have a detachable head and a robotic body which is why the character is wearing chokers and turtle necks throughout the first season to cover up where her head was supposed to come off. However, all scenes of this idea were cut out during the episodes aired, despite clips being included in some of the early advertisements.
