The "Dangerous Food" segment of this episode was subject to a lawsuit for libel by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. Oprah and her guest Howard Lyman were found not guilty of any wrongdoing early in 1998.
This episode, in which Tom Cruise jumped on the couch and around the set, became so infamous that it was rerun the following week. It spawned the slang term "jumping the couch" which actually became an entry in Oxford's Historical Dictionary of American Slang.
Terrence Howard's father, Tyrone, was invited to appear on the show to discuss the infamous "Santa Line Slaying" but declined.
During her interview, Jennifer Garner revealed that she'd had to have her ears pierced especially for the $250,000 diamond earrings she'd worn to the Oscars ceremony.
