Summary: The President sends George to talk U.S. Grant into taking over the Army. While at it, he asks Grant to give him a command, and he is promoted to General. Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation. Slaves start leaving the plantations in the south, including Mont Royal, leaving the Main women to fend for themselves. Ashton returns to Mont Royal, but when it is clear she isn’t wanted, she tells Madeline that she knows about her past.
