Summary: When a dog digs up a newly severed female foot and ankle, Emma and Frank return to the small town in which she spent part of her nomadic childhood to investigate the crime. As figures from Emma's past keep popping up and the mystery slowly unfolds, the two FBI agents discover that this is not simply an isolated incident but one in a series of killings of college age women that have occurred over many years. Although using his "profiling" abilities Frank early on discovers who he believes to be the killer there is no real hard evidence linking the killer to the murders. Drawing upon his many years of experience dealing with the psychology of killers and using his unique talent to peer into an individual's psyche, Frank slowly "peels the onion" of the killer's mind.

In this episode, not only does Emma Hollis reiterate that she had a sister called Melissa but we also learn that she grew up in naval barracks. This is also true of other fellow Chris Carter creation, Special Agent Dana Scully from his hit show "The X-Files".
