Jacob: [pauses, taken aback] Tell you what, would you like a job?
Richard Alpert: A job? Doing what?
Jacob: If I don't step in, maybe you could. You could be my representative and intermediary to the people I bring to this Island.
Richard Alpert: What would I get in return?
Jacob: You tell me...
Richard Alpert: I want my wife back.
Jacob: I can't do that.
Richard Alpert: Can you absolve me of my sins?
Jacob: I can't do that either.
Richard Alpert: Then I don't want to die... I want to live forever.
Jacob: [smiles, lays a hand on his shoulder] Now that, I can do.
Jacob: Yes, many.

Mistakes/Goofs
- Goof (revealing mistake): The white rock the man-in-black is carrying in the final scene is not the same white rock that Richard Alpert put into the man-in-black's hand earlier. Near the end of the show, Jacob told the man-in-black, "I see you got my present."
- Goof (anachronisms): When Richard's dying wife takes off her cross necklace, you can see that it has spring ring clasp which was invented in the early 1900s. The scene takes place in the 1860s.
- Goof (continuity error): After Jacob defeats Richard, he can be seen standing over him holding the dagger that Richard was using, in his right hand. After Richard is shown while speaking his line, we can see Jacob again with no dagger in his hand. A little later, after Jacob and Richard have finished their conversation, Jacob is suddenly holding the dagger again, and proceeds to drop it in the sand.
- Goof (continuity error): Ilana's head bandage is different around her eyes in the last scene.
Trivia
- Co-writer Greggory Nations explains in the DVD audio-commentary that Richard's origin was not random. Nations chose the Canary Islands because: 1) They are islands; 2) They are volcanic islands and 3) The legend of the eight Canary Island (San Borondón) that shows up and disappears. Besides, it was easier for actor Nestor Carbonell speaking Spanish without faking accents, because his Cuban accent can pass for a person from the Canary Islands.
- The statue seen when the Black Rock crashes onto the island is Taweret, a figure in Egyptian mythology. She was the goddess of pregnancy, childbirth and fertility, and the symbol she holds in her hand (an ankh) is the Egyptian symbol of life. It is interesting to note that the island is known for its healing properties, and effects on fertility in men, as indicated by Jin being able to impregnate his wife after having been sterile. Taweret was also a protector, thought to restrain evil, which makes sense in light of Jacob's explanation that the Island is there to contain evil.
- Aside the season finales and the season 6 premiere (double episodes), this is the longest episode of the series.
- Ab aeterno means "from eternity" in Latin.
