Summary: The castaways who make it onto the raft are surprised at sea by something that unexpectedly happens -- they make their first contact with "others" out at sea, but meet disastrous results. Meanwhile, remaining islanders attempt to blow open the hatch that's in the forest, but this proves to be more difficult than expected. Another survivor on the island dies. Visiting French woman Danielle Rousseau becomes a threat to Claire's infant son as she decides to kidnap him and bring him into the woods for "the others" to have in order to save the rest. Lastly, flashbacks show us all the survivors in the moments before the doomed flight took off.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

SYNC: During Michael's flashback of the airport a close-up of Michael shows him talking to his mother on the phone and then pauses for her reply, when it cuts to a wide shot of Michael, his mouth is moving but nothing is heard. It cuts back to the close up, the pause ends and he answers.
FAKE: When Michael is talking to his mother on the phone at the airport, Walt appears behind Michael and tells him that he needs new batteries. Walt was playing a Gameboy Advance SP, which uses a rechargeable battery, so it wouldn't need new batteries.
FAKE: In a lot of the shots with Claire's baby after Russeo has taken him, you can clearly see the fake baby. The most revealing shot is when Charlie brings the baby back to Claire and someone is walking towards the camera with the baby, you can clearly see the entire head of the doll.
CONT: Michael fires the flare and we see it fizzle out. However in a subsequent shot, the flare is still ablaze.
FACT: The radar screen on the raft shows a rotating trace on a circular screen. To get this kind of display, the radar antenna must be mechanically rotated. The antenna on the raft is fixed in one position (pointing to the aft).

TRIVIA

In the season finale, while they are building the raft, Michael instructs Jin, "No, this one goes there, that one goes there. Right?" This is a quote from Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) spoken by Han Solo to Chewbacca when the two are working on the Millennium Falcon. Later, while on the raft, Sawyer refers to them as Han and Chewie.
The last 2 minutes of this episode contain no spoken dialog whatsoever.
Hurley boarded through gate 23 - one of the numbers he used to win the lottery.
When Hurley is racing through the airport on the scooter, the backs of a girl's soccer team is shown. Their jersey numbers, in order, are 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42.
During filming of the first season finale, each cast member was only given the script pages of scenes where they appeared.
