Season 1 » Episode #04 - Walkabout

Lost - 01x04 Walkabout
Summary: Survivors are jolted awake in the middle of the night when wild island beasts (which are wild boars) invade the beach encampment. Kate and Michael join the mysterious Locke on a hunt for food - and a shocking secret about Locke is revealed. On the hunt for food someone is injured. Meanwhile, some survivors are horrified by Jack's plan for the dead bodies still scattered among the wreckage - he wants to burn them. Jack sees someone that's not there, and we find out that one of the survivors was not able to walk but now he can.
A Locke-centric episode.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (continuity error): When Hurley and Charlie are trying to catch fish with the spear, Hurley's t-shirt changes from being wet all over the front to only wet halfway up his chest.
  • Goof (incorrectly regarded as a mistake): Locke speaks on the phone to a woman named Helen, whom he offers to take to his walkabout, but she can't get involved with her clients. She also mentions that they had been speaking for only a few months. Later in the series, we find that Locke was romantically attached to a woman named Helen to whom he proposed. This is an attempt by Locke to re-create his relationship with Helen, who rejected his proposal and left him.
  • Goof (errors made by characters, possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): In the flashback to Locke's lunch hour at the box company, he names Norman Croucher as having climbed Mount Everest despite being a double amputee. Croucher was a double amputee, but the mountain he climbed was Cho Oyu (still the world's sixth-tallest) and not Everest.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Jack and Rose are talking on the beach, the blanket over Rose's left shoulder changes position between shots, being on in one and then off in the next

Trivia

  • Right after Locke gets off the phone in his office, his boss reminds him that he needs the "TPS reports", a possible reference to Office Space further showing that Locke is a merely a simple office worker.
  • This episode reiterates a lot of scenes from the pilot, featuring the mayhem immediately after the crash. These are not the original scenes but were all actually economically recreated for this episode.
  • SPOILER: In this episode we learn that John Locke was actually wheelchair bound prior to the crash.
  • Locke mentions that he worked as a collections supervisor for a box company. In episode 1.18, Numbers, that featured Hurley, we learn that his accountant has purchased controlling interest in a box company for Hurley's portfolio. Hurley is therefore Locke's boss.
  • No real boars were involved in the making of this episode (even though it's all about hunting some down).
