Summary: Stripped of everything, the 48 survivors scavenge what they can from the plane for their survival. Some panic. Some pin their hopes on rescue. A few find inner strength they never knew they had—like Kate who, with no medical training, suddenly finds herself suturing the doctor's wounds. The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain. But the intense howls of the mysterious creatures stalking the jungle fill them all with fear. Fortunately, thanks to the calm leadership of quick-thinking Jack and level-headed Kate, they have hope. But even heroes have secrets, as the survivors will come to learn.

MISTAKES/GOOFS
- CONT: When Jack uses his tie in the first scenes, you can see he is still wearing it in the next shot.
- CONT: During the flashback sequences for both the pilot and the finale, different characters are meant to be traveling through different sections of the plane, although it appears that, with the exception of business class, the same section was used for filming but with different people. This becomes a problem when spoken lines referring to seat numbers as well as the footage from right before the crash doesn't match at all to the boarding footage in the finale.
- PLOT: Rose is not wearing her husband's wedding ring around her neck as she later says she always does when they are flying.
- CONT: In his flashback, Charlie runs from the flight attendants to the front of the plane and locks himself in a bathroom. During the turbulence, he leaves the bathroom and straps himself in a business class seat. We later learn that the front section of the aircraft (business class) separated and landed somewhere in the jungle, yet Charlie is a fuselage-section survivor on the beach.
- FACT: The Oceanic airplane is supposed to be a Boeing 777, but when you see Jack running through the wreckage you can see that the main landing gear of the plane has only 4 wheels instead of the six a B-777 would have. Also, when Kate, Jack and Charlie reach the front section of the plane, in several shots where you can see the instruments of the cockpit, there are 3 engine indicators instead of the two a 777 would have
TRIVIA
- The still-turning jet engine on the beach was added in digitally later. During filming, all that was on set was the cowling.
- Boone frequently wears a t-shirt with Chinese characters meaning 84, which are two of the numbers that frequently appear throughout the show.
- When the idea was to have Jack killed off in the pilot, the creators discussed casting Michael Keaton as Jack.
- During its original airing, the first half of the pilot was shown without commercials.
- Note that there is hardly any red in the opening crash, including on the plane and its logo. This was J.J. Abrams' wish as he didn't want to desensitize audiences with too much gore, and also to make the full revelation of Jack's injury more impactful.
