Summary: Stripped of everything, the 48 survivors scavenge what they can from the plane for their survival. Some panic. Some pin their hopes on rescue. A few find inner strength they never knew they had—like Kate who, with no medical training, suddenly finds herself suturing the doctor's wounds. The band of friends, family, enemies and strangers must work together against the cruel weather and harsh terrain. But the intense howls of the mysterious creatures stalking the jungle fill them all with fear. Fortunately, thanks to the calm leadership of quick-thinking Jack and level-headed Kate, they have hope. But even heroes have secrets, as the survivors will come to learn.

MISTAKES/GOOFS
- FAKE: When the scene where the engine explodes is slowed down a black object can be seen flying down and hitting the engine. While some fans believed that this may have been the Monster destroying the engine, the producers confirmed that it is merely a CGI rendering error and that what was meant to be debris flying away from the exploding engine instead became an object hitting it.
- CONT: During the flashback sequences for both the pilot and the finale, different characters are meant to be traveling through different sections of the plane, although it appears that, with the exception of business class, the same section was used for filming but with different people. This becomes a problem when spoken lines referring to seat numbers as well as the footage from right before the crash doesn't match at all to the boarding footage in the finale.
- CONT: In his flashback, Charlie runs from the flight attendants to the front of the plane and locks himself in a bathroom. During the turbulence, he leaves the bathroom and straps himself in a business class seat. We later learn that the front section of the aircraft (business class) separated and landed somewhere in the jungle, yet Charlie is a fuselage-section survivor on the beach.
- CONT: When Jack uses his tie in the first scenes, you can see he is still wearing it in the next shot.
- FACT: The Oceanic airplane is supposed to be a Boeing 777, but when you see Jack running through the wreckage you can see that the main landing gear of the plane has only 4 wheels instead of the six a B-777 would have. Also, when Kate, Jack and Charlie reach the front section of the plane, in several shots where you can see the instruments of the cockpit, there are 3 engine indicators instead of the two a 777 would have
TRIVIA
- "Black and white" myth: Charlie puts white tape on his fingers, and writes "Fate" with a black marker.
- For the first flashback in the series - set on board the plane before it crashes - the interior fuselage set was the same one that was used in the feature film Soul Plane (2004).
- Boone frequently wears a t-shirt with Chinese characters meaning 84, which are two of the numbers that frequently appear throughout the show.
- When the idea was to have Jack killed off in the pilot, the creators discussed casting Michael Keaton as Jack.
- J.J. Abrams was originally going to cast Michael Keaton for Jack Shephard before the pilot was finally scripted, when Jack was going to be killed off halfway through. When it was changed that he would be a regular, in fact the star of the show as opposed to a guest spot, Keaton declined.
