Summary: The murder of a female probation officer (guest star Angela Reed) leads Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) to suspect her boyfriend, a college anthropology professor, or his delinquent teenaged son who reported to the victim -- but their attention soon turns to the dead woman's vagabond family of Irish gypsies. The detectives connect a few dots and discover that the clannish family's lifestyle was to keep moving from one petty scam to another, a lifestyle that the probation officer vehemently opposed and intended to change for at least one relative. Jamey Sheridan and Courtney B. Vance also star.

The Irish clans in the show speak Shelta, an Irish nomadic language that is derived from Irish Gaelic, English, Roma, and some other languages. The name of the language is allegedly derived from Irish "siúlta", "of walking". The episode name means "strangers" in the Shelta language.
