The show was originally broadcast live. In 2004, due to increasing concerns about offending local affiliates, the show began taping an hour before airtime so network executives can vet it before it goes to air.
On August 21, 2012, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live will move from 12:00 AM to 11:35 PM broadcast, putting the show up directly against The Tonight Show and The Late Show for the first time since its debut. Nightline, would be moving to 12:35 after Jimmy Kimmel Live. The change is to go into effect in January 2013.
Jimmy Kimmel hosted the entire show as Jay Leno, wearing a wig and fake chin - supposedly because Leno was now taking over all of late night television - with bandleader Cleto Escobedo III imitating the mannerisms of Leno's bandleader Kevin Eubanks. The first guest, Chevy Chase, appeared wearing a 'Conan OBrien wig.
The version of Chickenfoot that performed is the 2011/2012 touring version, which replaces drummer Chad Smith with drummer Kenny Aronoff.
