Episode Quotes

Tyrion Lannister: I want what is mine by right. Jaime is your eldest son, heir to your lands and titles, but he is a Kingsguard, forbidden from marriage or inheritance. The day Jaime put on the white cloak he gave up his claim to Casterly Rock. I am your son and lawful heir.
Tywin Lannister: [nods] You want Casterly Rock?
Tyrion Lannister: It is mine by right.
Tywin Lannister: We'll find you accommodations more suited to your name and as a reward for your accomplishments during the Battle of Blackwater Bay. And when the time is right, you will be given a position fit for your talents, so that you can serve your family and protect our legacy. And if you serve faithfully, you will be rewarded with a suitable wife - and I would let myself be consumed by maggots before mocking the family name and making you heir to Casterly Rock!
Tyrion Lannister: [quietly] Why?
Tywin Lannister: [raises his voice in anger] Why? You ask that? You who killed your mother to come into the world?

Tywin Lannister: You are an ill-made, spiteful little creature full of envy, lust, and low cunning. Men's laws give you the right to bear my name and display my colors since I cannot prove that you are not mine. And to teach me humility, the gods have condemned me to watch you waddle about wearing that proud lion that was my father's sigil and his father's before him. But neither gods nor men will ever compel me to let you turn Casterly Rock into your whorehouse. Go, now. Speak no more of your rights to Casterly Rock. Go!

Tywin Lannister: One more thing.

Tywin Lannister: The next whore I catch in your bed, I'll hang.

Tywin Lannister: [sighs] We'll find you accommodations more suited to your name and as a reward for your accomplishments during the Battle of Blackwater Bay. And when the time is right, you will be given a position fit for your talents so that you can serve your family and protect our legacy. Cersei Lannister: [referring to Tyrion's new quarters] "A bit of a comedown from chamber of the Hand. But then I don't suppose you need much room.
Tyrion Lannister: Grand Maester Pycelle made the same joke. You must be proud to be as funny as a man whose balls brush his knees.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (anachronisms): When Margaery Tyrell is speaking to the orphans of the Battle of Blackwater Bay, as her handmaiden begins to hand out toys to the children, an email notification sound from a computer on the set can be heard in the background.
  • Goof (audio/visual unsynchronized): At the dinner scene with King Joffrey and his mother, Lady Margaery comments, "They tell me a hundred wagons arrive daily now from the reach." There is an audio cut where "hundred" was dubbed in; she clearly mouths thousand.

Trivia

  • In the novel, Missandei is ten years old. In the series she is portrayed as considerably older.
  • The episode title "Valar Dohaeris" is an expression in High Valyrian, whose meaning is "all men must serve". It is a customary saying in Essos, and is traditional answer to the expression "Valar Morghulis" - "all men must die".
  • Cersei's comment to Tyrion "They say you'd lost your nose" refers to the book, in which Tyrion's nose was mostly cut off when Mandon Moore attempted to kill him.
  • Robb mentions that "the Lannisters have been running from us since Oxcross". This is the first time that the Battle of Oxcross has actually been referred to by name on-screen.
  • SPOILER: Daenerys actually understands both High and Low Valyrian, which she learned from growing up in the Free Cities. In the books, it is explained that she feigned not understanding it and needing a translator (Missandei) in order to trick the slavers into carelessly speaking freely in front of her, and thus revealing their secrets.
