Futurama - 01x08 A Big Piece of Garbage
Summary: Tonight is the annual inventors symposium, and the Professor is hoping that his invention is good enough to win the prize and beat Dr. Wernstrom. He presents the Smelloscope, a device that allows one to smell distant objects. Though he is laughed off the stage by his peers, the crew tests it out back at the Planet Express. Fry discovers what is believed to be the smelliest object in the universe. They learn that the object is a giant ball of garbage that was rocketed into outer space fifty years ago. Now, it's up to the Planet Express crew to figure out how to stop the garbage ball before it crashes to the earth and destroys New New York.

Episode Quotes

Mayor C. Randall Poopenmayer: I hope this is not another scientific hoax, like global warming or second-hand smoke.
Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Wernstrom!
Professor Ogden Wernstrom: The very same.
Professor Ogden Wernstrom: And what will you be presenting this evening, professor?
Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Let's just say it'll put you young whippersnappers in your place.
Professor Ogden Wernstrom: I just hope it's not that lame death clock you presented last year.
Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Uh... last year, you say?
Professor Ogden Wernstrom: That's right.
Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Oh, my. Did it put you young whippersnappers in your place?
Professor Ogden Wernstrom: Hardly. We all laughed so hard our teeth fell out. Come along, Cinnamon. [Wernstrom leaves with his fish]
Professor Hubert Farnsworth: Oh, dear. I'll have to invent something new in the next ten minutes. Perhaps some sort of death clock.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (continuity error): At the inventions competition, when Ron Popeil introduces Ogden Wernstrom, Fry is sitting in the audience with his normal red jacket on. In the closeup, he is in a black suit.

Trivia

  • First appearance of Professor Wernstrom.
  • In this episode the professor invents a death clock which Fry try's out. Fry's "time left to live" is not shown to the viewers but Bender makes a comment as if Fry didn't have much time left. He would then come to prove that clock right by dying 10 years later in Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder (2009) (V).
