Season 1 » Episode #05 - Fear of a Bot Planet

Futurama - 01x05 Fear of a Bot Planet
Summary: The crew is out watching a game of blernsball when Bender notes that the robots are only employed as service workers to do the "crap work." He grows increasingly upset by this, but his anger is interrupted by Hermes' report of a package that arrived. The crew returns home and learns that the package's destination is Chapek 9. Because the planet is inhabited by robots that kill humans on sight, only Bender can make the actual delivery. Unfortunately, the robots discover that he came with humans. Leela and Fry must go save him, even though he might not be as helpless as they think.

Episode Quotes

Leela: We'd be killed instantly if we set foot on the surface, so we need to look and act like robots.
Fry: [robotic voice] I am fully operational.
Leela: We need to move like robots, talk like robots, and if necessary, solve complex differential equations like robots.
Fry: I can sort of dance like a robot. [does the robot]
Leela: Fry, first of all, this is serious. And second of all... [does the robot better]
Robot Mayor: Today we have a special guest, whose irrational hatred of humans makes me look like a human sympathizer.
Dr. Zoidberg: I'll have some squid log.
Hot Dog Vendor: Sorry, we don't serve that.
Dr. Zoidberg: Fine, then I'll have one of your young on a roll.
Hot Dog Vendor: We don't serve rolls.
Dr. Zoidberg: Fine, just give me something crawling with parasites.

Fry: At least hot dogs haven't changed.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (continuity error): In the judgment scene, when the judge freezes up, Fry yells: "Call technical support." In that frame, he is drawn with his manacle chain outside the bars, whereas in all other shots, it's on the inside with him.

Trivia

  • SPOILER: When Fry and Leela are exposed as humans, the robotic policemen shout, "Intruder alert! Intruder alert!" and "Get the humanoid!" using the same synthesized voices as "Berserk," the 1980s video game.
  • The surname of the player whose score Leela updates while the crew is at the blurnsball game is "Costanza" - a reference to George Costanza, a character on the sitcom Seinfeld, who was an employee of the present-day New York Yankees.
  • The name of this episode references the hip-hop album 'Fear of a Black Planet' by Public Enemy.
  • When the Planet Express crew is sent to a robot planet called "Chapek 9." Karel Capek (or his brother, according to interpretation) is the writer who coined the word "robot" in 1920.
