The young girls and boys tell the story about alien invasion. One of them was in school when the large ships came. Everyone hoped that they came to Earth in peace, but as soon as alien's ‘bright light’ turned off all of the electronics, human realized that they were wrong. But, then it was too late. War has already begun.

Aliens destroyed mayor cities, all military bases and killed all solders. After that, millions of aliens called ‘Skitters’ and ‘Mechs’ stepped down to Earth and started devastation invasion. They captured the children and putted them in harnesses in order to gain conrol over them. Now, regular moms and dads must fight to save human species.

In Boston, six months after invasion, story moves on to a group of survivors. Young Matt Mason is drawing a picture of his mother, who went to get some food and never came back. Later, they found her dead. His brother Ben, at that time, was at his friend’s house. He is now missing and they are not sure if he is harnessed or even dead. On another drawing, there are Matt’s father Tom and oldest brother Hal, they are alive – at least they were that morning. Anne Glass, a pediatrician, says that it's okay to be sad in hard times like these.

Tom, Hal and several other resistance fighters are searching for food and gas.

They are noticed and attacked by aliens (‘Mechs’ are mechanical, two-legged creatures severely armed and controlled by ‘Skitters’ – spiderlike, intelligent six-legged creatures). As they run to hide behind old car wrecks and defend themselves, all food was left behind and destroyed. Aggressive ‘Mechs’ killed most of Tom’s team (including Jameson, a commander of 2nd Mass), and his son and him had to return to theirs base empty handed and report this alarming situation.

After massive explosion, Back Bay (South Boston) is officially lost for resistance.

Back to the base camp, Anne showed Tom his son’s drawings.

But before he had any time to look at them, Tom is summoned to a meeting with Porter, commander of all the Massachusetts regimes. After latest destructions, Boston is no longer a safe place and they must retreat and move west to another city. They will split into a three small groups (100 fighters and 200 civilians maximum) that can’t be easily detected by Skitters aerial sensors. Weaver, fearless and experienced solder, is promoted to a commander of the 2nd Mass. His complete opposite - Tom, a history professor who cares for civilians needs, is second in command. Weaver wants to stay and fight, Tom wants to find his missing son – but main problem is that they are powerless. No one knows how to effectively kill aliens or remove harnesses from captured teenagers without harming kids’ health.

Later that night, few fighters shared theirs experience and stories they heard about Skitters. Anthony, a former policeman, and his best friend, Click said that it’s the best to shoot them in the head. Dai, Jimmy and Hal looked at a large alien ship parked above the Boston and fantasized about blowing it up. Tom, known among them as Professor Kickass, teaches them a few history lessons in which the best approach to enemy is an ambush.

Hal is very popular in the group. He spends most of his days with his girlfriend Karen, a young fellow scout and fighter. Another girl, Lourdes is interested in him and she uses every opportunity to offer him food and get closer to him.

As the morning came, the 2nd Mass is moving west. Tom tells Anne that the plan is to ‘retreat, regroup, return… and revenge’.

Anne's uncle Scott needs to fix a car problem in order to bring along medical supplies. Matt tells his father that he is sad because tonight was supposed to be his birthday party. His birthday wish is to see his family together and happy as they were before the invasion. With a lack of transportation, survivors are leaving books behind, but Tom decides to take one as reminder of better times. Anne tells Tom that before invasion she had a family – a husband and a child.

The 2nd Mass has a food deficit and Tom suggests forming a group of fighters that will go back to find more food and later rejoin 2nd at the Littleton Bridge. Weaver approves and Tom takes weapons and fighters - Hal, Karen, Dai, Anthony, Click and Jimmy.

Hal and Karen will ride ahead and scout for aliens. While waiting, Tom finds a dead boy with a harness partially removed from his back. He is afraid that even if they find Ben, they might not be able to help him.

Hidden in the trench, Hal sees several Mechs leading a group of harnessed teenagers.

Among them, he catches sight of his brother Ben. He doesn’t look anything like himself, it appears like he has no free will, but still - he is alive. He rushes back to tell this amazing news to his father, but he is surprised to find out that Tom will not let his group go on a dangerous quest of saving his son. Despite Hal’s wishes, he first must finish his mission of gathering food and that they can return to save Ben.

Tom's plan is to enter the Shop Smart with Dai and Hal, and if there are no aliens, the rest of the team will come in and grab as much as they can. Fighting aliens seems hard, but Tom tells them that (according to his history knowledge) they don’t have to kill all of them. If they damage them enough invaders may realize that conquering the Earth isn't worth the loss they suffered and leave.

Later, at night, the group went to the store according to the previous plan. But, they were ambushed.

Skitter first attacked Hal and Tom successfully defended him, but shooting attracted the Mech. Tom blows him up with a shopping cart full of C4. Dai shoots another Skitter who tried to attack Tom and while it was dying, they noticed that this creature feels pain and agony - same as humans.

Now, group is heading back and they rejoin the 2nd Mass. Tom asks Weaver to approve a rescue mission for his son Ben, but Weaver decides to allow that only after they scout the active nearby armory.

At the camp, Matt will have a short opportunity to celebrate his birthday. After he blows out a candle placed on the last cupcake, there is one more surprise. Hal brought him a present - RipStik. Kids take turns skateboarding and after a few short minutes of enjoying theirs childhood, the 2nd Mass is ready to move.

Weaver orders them to hurry up if they want to reach the safe meadow and make a camp before dark. Tom tells them to make formation and the 2nd Mass heads west.
