General Sam Courage mentions that he had been in the army for forty years. Given the fact that, before the outbreak of the Civil War, advancement through the ranks was pretty slow, taking forty years to make General was pretty much the norm. Prior to the start of the Civil War, there were only four officers of General rank in the Regular Army.
