Episode Quotes

Isobel Crawley: [Talking to Matthew about a letter that came from Downton Abbey] There are two young men staying, so you won't be so outnumbered for once.
Matthew Crawley: What men?
Isobel Crawley: A Turkish diplomat called something I can't read, and "Lord Branksome's charming son"... who is to be flung at Mary, presumably.
Matthew Crawley: When it comes to cousin Mary, she is quite capable of doing her own flinging, I assure you.
Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham: [talking to Cora about Mary]... we'd better get her settled before the bloom has gone quite off the rose.
Lady Mary Crawley: Our dentist is horrid.

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (factual errors): There were no surnames in Ottoman Empire and in Turkish Republic until 2 July 1934. People had titles such as Pasha. Therefore, there could not be a name such as Kemal Pamuk in that time.
  • Goof (anachronisms): Ottoman Turkish diplomat Mr Kemal Pamuk was introduced. The series was actually set around 1912. The Surname Law of the Republic of Turkey was adopted on June 21, 1934. Before then, Turks carried titles such as "Pasha", "Hoca", "Bey", "Hanim", "Efendi", etc.
  • Goof (anachronisms): Kemal Pamuk is said to be from Istanbul. In 1913 Istanbul was still known as Constantinople and wouldn't be renamed until after the start of WWI.
