Season 2 Trivia

  • Episode 05 - This is the last episode in which Mainwaring addresses the platoon as "chaps". He subsequently uses the term "men" because writers Jimmy Perry and 'David Croft' thought it would be less democratic and therefore more in keeping with the character.
  • Episode 02 - This episode was wiped by the BBC and no copy of it was known to exist until 2001, when a 16mm telerecording was returned to the BBC by a member of the public. It had been saved purely by chance when it was taken out of a tip at Elstree Studios in the 1970s.
  • Episode 05 - There is currently no known copy of this edition in existence, although the off-air soundtrack was discovered in the unknowing possession of a private collector in 2008.
  • Episode 06 - This edition of the series was the last to be recorded in monochrome; there is currently no known copy of it in existence.
  • Episode 05 - Capt. Square refers to "Section 40" - this is a reference to a section of the Army Act, which covered "conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline". He also refers to charge sheets as "two five two's" - the charge sheet was army form number 252.
