Countdown is the first programme broadcast on Channel 4 on 2 November 1982. It is a numbers and letters game between two contestants, and was always presented by Richard Whiteley and Carol Vorderman. Following Richard's death the show returned with Des Lynam as host(Grandstand). But he was soon replaced by comedian/singer Des O'Connor.

Special Announcement: The next series will be without Carol Vordermann and Host Des O'Connor. Carol who has been with the show for 26 years will be replaced by Oxford graduate Rachel Riley, 22. Jeff Stelling will replace Des.(They are pictured in the show image above).

Random Fun Fact: In May 2005, Richard Whiteley caught pneumonia, and his position as host was to be temporarily filled by a series of guest presenters during the recording of Series 54. He later died in June, and after auditions for a new host the show returned in October hosted by Desmond Lynam. The guest-presented ... - [more trivia]
