Season 1 » Episode #04 - Dead Man Dating

Charmed - 01x04 Dead Man Dating
Summary: Prue tries to avoid a birthday celebration while Phoebe takes a cheesy job as a lounge psychic so she can afford a decent birthday gift. What started as a trivial way for Phoebe to use her powers for cash becomes a positive experience when she saves a man's life. Prue is devastated when she finds Andy on a lunch date with the ex-Mrs. Trudeau, whom she didn't know existed. Piper befriends a ghost, Mark (guest star John Cho), who was murdered by a gang leader and whose ghostly soul will be dragged to hell if his body doesn't get a proper burial. The sisters save Mark's soul, but Piper is brokenhearted after he vanishes. Realizing every birthday in life should be celebrated, the sisters throw a bash for Prue, who accepts a forgiving smile from Andy. After all, how can she resent his keeping a secret when she has a whopper of her own.

Mark Chao: Yeah, so are you.
Piper: [Yama appears] Mark, I think you should get outta here.
Mark Chao: Make a wish, you bastard. [throws Wong on spear]

Mistakes/Goofs

  • Goof (incorrectly regarded as a mistake): When Prue, Piper, and Phoebe are in the kitchen discussing Mark being a ghost, Phoebe asks "How do we know he doesn't really belong in hell?" and Piper answers "Because we can see him. He's one of the innocents we're supposed to protect." But in later shows, they can see evil ghosts. However as he is the first ghost they have come across they have no idea that they can see all ghosts. They discover this later in this episode when they see the ghost of the killer.
  • Goof (continuity error): Phoebe writes down two Chinese characters on her hand, then shows her hand to the others. The camera then cuts to another angle, and she's still holding her hand up, but there's nothing on it. Then the camera cuts to a close up, and the characters are on her hand again.
  • Goof (audio/visual unsynchronized): After shooting Mark, Wong prepares to set Mark's body on fire. Wong strikes the match on the matchbook before bending down out of frame but the scratching noise is not heard until well after he is out of frame.
  • Goof (crew or equipment visible): Right after Phoebe sits down on Prue's bed to talk you can see people moving in the reflection in the mirror behind Prue.
  • Goof (continuity error): When Piper gets kidnapped, Prue and Phoebe come downstairs wearing different clothes than what they had on in the scene before, upstairs.

Trivia

  • The title is based upon the movie Dead Man Walking.
  • This is the first time that a ghost appears on the show.
