Summary: Joyce visits Dawn from the beyond, Buffy has a revealing chat with a vampire, and Willow receives a ghostly visitor whom she believes may well be Tara, all of which portend an imminent, unpleasant future. Meanwhile, Jonathan and Andrew return to Sunnydale for some inevitably unpleasant mischief.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

CONT: After Dawn pulls the plug on the television set she holds it up in front of her chest, but in the reverse angle she is holding the plug down by her hip.
PLOT: The First is supposed to be non-corporeal, yet when it visits Willow in the form of Cassie, it touches books and the table, and sits down in a chair.

TRIVIA

According to the DVD commentary, a scene was intended for Kali Rocha to return as Halfrek to haunt Anya. This scene was never made as Kali Rocha was busy with her acting on stage in New York.
Originally, Xander was supposed to talk to The First in the form of Jesse (Eric Balfour), his buddy from Season 1. However, when Eric was unavailable, a replacement for him couldn't be found, so the scene was never filmed and as a result, Xander doesn't appear in the episode, making it the only episode of the show not to feature Nicholas Brendon.
This plot is told entirely in real time in between the commercials.
Joss Whedon and Marti Noxon are both uncredited writers on this episode, each writer writing one of the four different segments. The Dawn/Joyce segments were written by Jane Espenson, the Andrew, Johnathan and Warren segments were Drew Goddard's, Marti Noxon wrote the Willow/Cassie scenes, and Joss Whedon wrote Buffy's conversation with Holden.
Amber Benson (I)was supposed to return as The First Evil impersonating Tara, but she didn't want to come back just as a villain, so Cassie Newton (Azura Skye) from a recent episode was put in her place.
