Cassie's name is the short version of Cassandra. In the Greek mythology, Cassandra, King Priam's daughter, was cursed with the ability of prophecy, but no one believed her.
SPOILER: Before Cassie Newton dies, she cryptically informs Spike, "She'll tell you before the end." This was meant to foreshadow Buffy telling Spike that she loves him in the series finale.
SPOILER: Cassie Newton's death (as well as Joyce Summers in episode 5.16, "The Body") are the only ones in the show's huge body-count that were due to natural causes.
Willow visits Tara's grave for the first time, and she leaves a small handful of stones on top of the gravestone. There is a Jewish tradition (Willow is Jewish) that one leaves a small stone or two on the gravestone during every visit to a loved one's grave. This tradition is also visible at the end of another Joss Whedon project, Serenity (2005), in which such stones are visible on the graves at the end of the film.
The book Cassie Newton is reading, "Slaughterhouse-Five" by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., deals with a alien race who can view the future as they travel through their lives in a non-linear time, but have no free will; much like Cassie knows what will happen but cannot change her fate.
