Summary: A mysterious man named Ethan uses a new Halloween costume shop to turn the citizens of Sunnydale into the costume they dress up as. When Spike finds out that Buffy will be vulnerable on Halloween night, he decides to take advantage of the situation and get her while she's down.

MISTAKES/GOOFS

FAKE: Oz's van's steering wheel is on the right side.
FAKE: When Willow and Buffy are reading The Watchers Diary, Willow asks the name of the girl who is pictured. Buffy says it doesn't say when in close-up of the page, we can clearly see the name "Sarah Greenwood" next to the picture.
CONT: Willow can't touch anything, but when she leaves the costume shop we hear her shut the shop door.
PLOT: A vampire enters the Summers home after Angel by simply walking in the house, yet vampires must be invited into a home before they can enter. Neither Buffy nor her mother invited the vampire in.
FACT: The role of the Roman god Janus is somewhat distorted here. He was the god of transitions; his name is related to 'janitor' (which originally meant a doorman) and 'January' (the gate between years). His two faces look to the past and the future.

TRIVIA

Giles's friend Ethan Rayne calls him Ripper. At one point this was the name given to another spin-off from the series but the plans fell through after both "Buffy" and "Angel" finished.
Writer Carl Ellsworth was fired by Joss Whedon immediately after completing the script for this episode.
At the end of the episode, Ethan leaves a note for Giles that says "Be Seeing You". This is a tribute to the cult series, "The Prisoner" (1967) where that phrase was used as a typical farewell.
