"Grandma" to Alan and Nathaniel, Sophie is the archtypical grandmother, strict one moment and indulgent the next, always willing to offer the boys some words of wisdom along with something to eat. She feels secure in her neat apartment in Brooklyn, and continually urges the family to stay together in the area.
