The focal character of the series along with Sophie, Alan is 14 and in ninth grade when the series begins. He loves his home, his family--although Grandma's disapproval of his Catholic girlfriend is a bit dismaying--and his schoolwork, although what he really wants to be when he grows up is a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers (but didn't every boy in Brooklyn want that back then?).
