Summary: A man with a decades-long grudge against Denny Crane and his late attorney father takes the firm hostage, forcing staff at Crane, Poole & Schmidt to re-try a murder case in which a young Denny ensured the defendants acquittal. Scenes from a 50-year-old television pilot, The Defender featuring a young William Shatner are incorporated into the episode to show what transpired during the original case that led to the modern day hostage taking. Meanwhile, Alan Shore's attempt to defend an accused prostitute lands him in jail for contempt of court.

Denny Crane is forced to recall a trial with his father where they defended a murder suspect. It includes flashbacks of a very young William Shatner as the son of Ralph Bellamy. The flashbacks are from a TV show called "Studio One" (1948), and the name of the two-part episode was "Studio One" (1948) {The Defender: Part 1 (#9.20)}. The Joseph Gordon character, played by James Keane (I) on this show, was played by Steve McQueen (I) in 1957.
