Summary: During Denny Crane’s therapy session with Dr. Sydney Fields, a verbal showdown between the two results in Denny’s shooting the doctor. While Alan Shore defends Denny in court, the law partners discuss whether the time has come to oust Crane from the firm. Meanwhile, Alan runs into Chelina Hall and their old chemistry returns when he enlists her help in a racially charged case. And Brad Chase learns that he can’t keep a girl because he’s a lousy kisser, so he asks Denise Bauer to give him lessons.

As Alan and Denny walk in to Denny's therapist's hospital room, the cover-story of the magazine being read by the therapist is "A New Crisis For Pacific Salmon". The fate of Pacific Salmon has been an ongoing joke on the series, beginning with Denny facing off against his son Donny Crane in Season 1.
The episode's title plays on the legal term "res ipsa loquitur", a Latin phrase which translates: "The thing speaks for itself."
Peter MacNiccol was famous for portraying John Cage in "Ally McBeal", also created by David E. Kelley. "Ally McBeal" is strangely set in the same "universe" as Boston Legal, as it is a spin- off of "The Practice" and there were three crossovers of "The Practice" and "Ally McBeal"
This episode was produced as episode 18 of Season 1. When the first season was cut short due to the success of "Grey's Anatomy" (2005), the last 5 episodes of the season were held back until Season 2. For unknown reasons, it wasn't aired at the beginning of the season but instead held until near the end of Season 2, with a completely reworked story to eliminate the old characters and integrate the new ones.
When Alan Shore first sees Chelina Hall, he quips that when he last saw her they were on Sunday nights, then they were canceled for a while an now they're on Tuesday nights. In reality, this is what happened to the show "Boston Legal" itself. It debuted on Sunday nights after "Desperate Housewives" (2004), but was put on hiatus when "Grey's Anatomy" (2005) proved to draw higher ratings in the same time slot. It returned in the fall on Tuesday nights.
