Manji notably bears the symbol of a Swastika on his back. In Eastern culture the symbol has a deep spiritual meaning over the common Nazi symbol.
Manji's Japanese characters represent eternality.
U.S. distributor AnimeWorks of Media Blasters advertised the series as being animated by Production I.G's division Bee Train, which is an inaccuracy. Bee Train has been independent of Production I.G since 2006. However Production I.G did co-produce the series with Bee Train.
Before getting the chance to meet author Hiroaki Samura, series writer Hiroyuki Kawasaki had initially thought Samura was a woman author.
