Automan followed the adventures of a police officer and computer programmer named Walter who had created an artificially intelligent crime fighting program that generated a hologram able to leave the computer world and enter reality to help solve crime. The series only lasted 13 episodes (of which 12 were aired in it's original broadcast).

  • No computer animation was used to create the effects. Only traditional animation and editing techniques were used.
  • Glen A. Larson was inspired to create the series after seeing TRON (1982). Producer Donald Kushner also produced that film.
  • According to Chuck Wagner, he based his performance on William Shatner as Captain Kirk in Star Trek: The Original Series of which he is a big fan.
