The series started out as a single sketch on French & Saunders (UK), entitled "The Modern Mother and Daughter".
The name of Jennifer Saunders' character, Eddy Monsoon, is a play on her husband's last name, Edmondson. Adrian Edmondson previously used the name Eddy Monsoon himself for a character that appears in _"Comic Strip Presents, The" (1982)_.
All five of the main character's real names begin with the letter J.
In the episode "The Last Shout, part 1", Patsy Stone makes reference to "when I was a Bond Girl"; the actress who portrays Patsy, Joanna Lumley, actually played a Bond girl in On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
Jane Horrocks originally auditioned for the part of Saffron, but Jennifer Saunders adapted and expanded the role of Bubble for her instead.

The inspiration for casting Joanna Lumley as Patsy came from a sketch on "The Full Wax" (1991) in which Ruby Wax interviewed Lumley, where the actress (who had previously been seen as a prim and proper English rose) played herself as a drunk, cocaine addicted washed up has-been.
In the episode "Morrocco" the houseboy is named Yentob. Alan Yentob was then the director of BBC1.
The cameo role of Patsy's sister Jackie Stone (based loosely on Jacqueline Kennedy) was originally intended for Charlotte Rampling but she declined. 'Kate OMara was cast instead.
Despite playing mother and daughter, Jennifer Saunders is only 10 years older than co-star Julia Sawalha.

All the France scenes were filmed over a period of two days in the middle of bad weather. All the shots which appear in the finished episode were taken when the weather finally died down. Also in this episode it is revealed that Patsy has never been married, while Edina has been married twice before.
The scenes at the chateau were filmed at the "Chateau La Canorgue" in Bonnieux. This place was also the main filming location for the Ridley Scott's movie A Good Year.
When Patsy's luggage is searched there is a paperback edition of the Judith Krantz novel "Dazzle" in her baggage.
Near the end of the holiday at the cottage, Patsy is seen reading the 30 January 1992 issue of Paris Match, whose cover announces Le Crash du Lyon-Strasbourg, La Nuit de l'Horreur.

The rest was filmed in a sound studio in Britain. This episode was also rated the worst episode in AbFab's history as of 2002. Episode #2.05 "Poor" was meant to air 3rd.
Both Edina and Patsy falling into the graves wasn't planned until the last moment. The original plan was for just Eddie to fall into her father's coffin, and Patsy fall in with her trying to pull her out.
