Daughter of stage director 'Eric Thompson (I)' (qv) and 'Phyllida Law' (qv).
Younger sister of 'Emma Thompson (I)' (qv). Consequently she is the sister-in-law of 'Greg Wise' (qv), and the former sister-in-law of 'Kenneth Branagh' (qv).
She was awarded the 1999 'Laurence Olivier' (qv) Theatre Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in "Into the Woods".
Both Sophie and her sister Emma Thompson met their future husbands (Greg Wise and Richard Lumsden, respectively) on the set of Sense and Sensiblity.
Has two sons: Ernie James (b. 1997) and Walter Eric (b. 2000).
