BIOGRAPHY: Brooklyn's own Sid Melton (born Sidney Meltzer) inherited his comedic talent from his father, a well-known comic who appeared on stage with many of the greats of his era. Sid made his stage debut in the road company of the Broadway play "See My Lawyer" in 1939 and then, with an assist from his brother Lewis Meltzer, a screenwriter, broke into motion pictures two years later in Shadow of the Thin Man (1941). TV viewers are apt to associate him with some of the popular series, such as "Make Room for Daddy" (1953) and "Green Acres" (1965), in which he appeared as a regular, while B movie enthusiasts will remember him as the "house nebbish" for Lippert Pictures, a company that churned out scores of low-budget programmers in the late 1940s and early 1950s - and, it seemed, tried to "make room for Melton" in all of them.
TRIVIA:
- Provided long-standing comic relief for 'Danny Thomas (I)' (qv) on his classic TV show as Charlie Halper, owner of the Copa Club where Danny performed. Eventually 'Pat Carroll (I)' (qv) was added to the cast playing Halper's wife Bunny. Frequently kidding with the press, he told reporters he got the part of Charlie because Sid was the only person Thomas could find that was homelier than he was.
- He played Ed Ferguson, the roof guy, in "My Husband, The Rooster Renter" Episode: #1.5 - 13 October 1965 of _"Green Acres" (1965)_ (qv), then later came back as Alf Monroe the carpenter.
- He played Ichabod Mudd, "That's Mudd with two Ds." on the 50s TV show _"Captain Midnight" (1954)_ (qv), later renamed "Jet Jackson".
- His father, I. Meltzer, was a comedic actor in vaudeville and the Yiddish theater.
- Brother of screenwriter 'Lewis Meltzer' (qv).
