BIOGRAPHY:

Richard "Dick" Steele was a promising boxing prospect in southern California in the mid 1960s. A native of Los Angeles, made his professional boxing start at the famed Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles on August 8, 1966 knocking out "Mean" Gene Turner in 4 rounds. Steele was tagged a future champion when he put together an impressive knockout streak: Scott Wissoper KO 2, Henry Poucey KO 3, Tom Stancil KO 2, Chuck Hamilton Ko 1, Chuck Hamilton again KO 1, Henry Poucey KO 5, and Mark White KO 1. However, Steele's knockout run was ended in an upset knockout lose to journeyman Johnny Featherman in 5 rounds in Los Angeles. Shortly after Steele lost to Ralph McCoy and Chuck Hamilton and his once promising boxing career was over. Steele went on to become a respected and popular fight referee. His career was peaking when he was the third man for the Meldrick Taylor/Julio Cesar Chavez title bout. Steele received a storm of criticism for stopping the fight with only seconds remaining and awarding Chavez (who was behind on points) the victory.
