Was a member of the band Bumpus.
Her father a lawyer is of Japanese decent and her mother painter is of German-Italian descent.
As she showed early signs of a great voice, she was given a new role as a backup singer, then was finally assigned one of three lead vocal spots.
Her parents divorced when she was 2.
She first attended Northwestern University in Chicago, then Vassar, then Northwestern again, studying French, Italian and opera in addition to her theatrical pursuits.
