Was hired by director 'George Cukor' (qv) to teach 'Rex Harrison (I)' (qv) how to behave like an Edwardian-era phonetician for his role of Henry Higgins in _My Fair Lady (1964)_ (qv).
He was returning from a field trip in India at age 80 when he had a stroke in London, England. He was heading home to Aliso Viejo, California where he lived. He died from the stroke on January 24, 2006.
He was regarded as the world's foremost phonetician, a scholar who studies the acoustics and physiology of speech.
