He spent his early years in Turkey, from 1949 to 1956, owing to his father, the late Syed Musharrafu-ud-din's deputation in Ankara. Fluently he can converse in Turkish language and claims that Kamal Ataturk is his hero.
Seized power from the corrupt civillian government of Pakistan under then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on 12 October 1999 in a bloodless coup. He became the 'Chief Executive' of the country and in June 2000 became the 12th President of Pakistan.
Stepped down from Presidency on 18th August 2008.
Often advocates "Enlightened Islam" in the Muslim World, to the chagrin of the Islamic Extremists in Pakistan and abroad.
Currently the President of Pakistan.
Considered key ally in the US war on terrorism.
