BIOGRAPHY: One of the busiest character actors in the industry, Paul Fix appeared in more than 300 films during his career. He began in local theater and repertory companies in upstate New York, and journeyed to Hollywood in the early 1920s. Unlike many supporting actors, who basically play different versions of the same character throughout their career, Fix was tremendously versatile, and played everything from a cackling, gabby Irish railroad engineer to a cold-eyed hired gunfighter. Early in his career Fix became friends with John Wayne (I), and the two remained close for the rest of their lives, with Fix appearing in many of Wayne's films. The role Paul Fix will be most remembered for is that of Micah Torrance, the easy-going but tough marshal of North Fork, in the Chuck Connors (I) TV series "The Rifleman" (1958).
TRIVIA:
- Rumors report that Paul Fix taught 'John Wayne (I)' (qv) to walk the way he did. They were friends when Wayne first started acting, and Wayne wanted something to set him apart, so Fix suggested the rolling gait that became his trademark.
- Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Santa Monica, California - Block 17.
- Well known to _"Star Trek" (1966)_ (qv) fans as Dr. Mark Piper in the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before". His portrayal of the USS Enterprise's Chief Medical Officer was short-lived, and 'DeForest Kelley' (qv) (who would later become a regular cast member of the original Trek and the first six films) replaced him as the CMO.
- Had a stutter off-screen.
- Father-in-law of actor 'Harry Carey Jr.' (qv).
- Former resident of Santa Monica, California. Drove a black 1960s Cadillac with Long Horns attached to the front and personalized license plates reading: P FIX.
