BIOGRAPHY: Born in Camden, New Jersey, and raised in Watertown, New York, Norma Jean grew up as a typical small town girl. Her mother actually named her after Marilyn Monroe because she wanted her to be gifted. You can imagine a mother's horror when at age four, Norma Jean had a terrible accident with scissors and suffered near blindness in her left eye.
Just a year later, with the strength of a locomotive, she became interested in dance to overcome her obstacle. Her mother enrolled her in ballet at age five. Little did her mother know, this gift of dance would not only evolve into tap, jazz, creative and ballroom, but would transcend itself into many other art-related interests. During her childhood, Norma Jean played the piano, the flute, and the clarinet. She was in her high school band as color guard and majorette. She also won many USFSA (United States Figure Skating Association) badges, learned to roller skate, snow ski, water ski and operate a snowmobile.
After high school graduation, she held down three jobs and began to live on her own. She got back into the performing arts and tried her hand at Community Theater. In two years (and with no formal acting training), she performed in lead roles in four major productions with Little Theater of Watertown.
Later, she attended college and earned an Associates Degree in Administrative Assistance and later a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management. For her amazing efforts in college both academically and culturally, she was awarded both the Wall Street Journal Award for Outstanding Business Student and a spot in the Who's Who.
After a telecommunications career in Corporate America, she ventured off to more alternative career choices, which afforded her extensive travel throughout the United States and Europe. She has been featured on Discovery Channel, various talk radio programs, "The Dr. Susan Block Show" (1996), and had her writing featured in various alternative entertainment magazines and e-zines.
Today, Norma Jean's future remains very busy and bright. As Sales Director for Synapse FX, a Hollywood-Based Practical and CGI effects company, she works ferociously from home and the road to secure her company projects in major films, TV, and live stage. With a successful career in the art of Stand-Up Comedy, she not only performs as herself, but brings her mother to the stage in a character called "Bev," which has left audiences howling with rave reviews.
An original theme song by famous Hollywood Icon, Count Smokula, has also been written but not yet released. Through her stand-up material, she intends to deliver big messages on ridding stereotypes of alternative lifestyles, acceptance, honesty, motivation, love and ridiculous behaviors in relationships and society in general. The material is raw, funny, thought-provoking and definitely hits home!
Besides her personal ventures, Norma Jean participates in many creative projects. She works in movies and television; she also Emcee's Private and Corporate Events including Weddings, Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties, Birthday Parties and Charity Events.
Well, until now, the only things worth mentioning from Watertown were the original Five and Dime, Car Freshener Trees, Richard Grieco (I), 'Mary Margaret Humes' and Supermodel Maggie Rizer. Now Watertown can add someone else to its list.
A true class act with an "edge," Norma Jean is definitely "The Original Super Chick!"
TRIVIA:
- Her family (MacLachlan) clan has its own castle in Kilmarnock, Scotland.
- She had an accident with scissors when she was four, accidentally stabbing herself in her left eye. As a result, she has little vision in it, and the pupil is somewhat distorted. Because of this, she wears a prosthetic contact lens on that one eye when filming.
- Mother was a telephone operator, father was a commercial printer. Her stepfather (whom she grew up with) owned a roadside hot dog stand which later became the famous Watertown hot spot, "Dick Cooke's Leray Street Restuarant." He went on to also own a liquor store, gas station, and was a commercial Realtor on the side. It was he who taught Norma Jean the importance of good business, marketing skill and determination.
- Can mimic 15 voice accents.
- Her paternal side: grandmother was a nightclub singer, grandfather was a police officer in Philadephia, Pennsylvania.
- She is a huge supporter in the fight against Domestic Violence, as she was a victim herself. She has produced a comedy benefit show entitled, "Comedy Assault on Battery.".
- Her forte in stand-up comedy is developing and performing as "characters," which is inspired by her biggest comedy idols, 'Lily Tomlin' and 'Carol Burnett' (qv). Her first character was developed in 2006 and debuted in Huntington Beach. The character's name is "Bev," who smokes three packs a day and drinks milk to stay alive. Her second character, "Lynda Kay," hit the stage for the first time in December, 2007. Lynda Kay is from Fargo and moved to California to stay warm. As a hobby, she's taking stand-up comedy classes and then trying out her new jokes on audiences as she reads them (in a hilarious Minnesota accent) off paper and then asks, "Is that funny?" (More characters are in development).
- Has two boys, Brooks and Robert Jr.
