Was down to the last two for the part of Withnail with 'Richard E. Grant' (qv), but told his agent he didn't want the part because he couldn't relate to the character properly.
The only actor to have appeared in both the Mel Gibson and the Kenneth Branagh film versions of "Hamlet". He played Rosencrantz in the Gibson version, and Laertes in the Branagh version. Not only that, but he played and directed "Hamlet" in Kenneth Branagh's theatre spoof "In the Bleak Midwinter.".
