Discovered Rod Stewart singing for coins in a train station.
Recorded a rarely heard but beautiful love song, "Well I Did".
Although he had a 1967 pop chart number 1 with "Let the Heartaches Begin", his first love has always been Blues singing.
Nicknamed "Long John" due to his immense frame of 6' 7".
Credited as one of the main forces in British blues, rock and roll and pop music in the 1960s.
When Reginald Dwight needed a stage name he took the John for 'Elton John' from Long John Baldry.
