BIOGRAPHY: After modeling and working for a radio station in Akron, Ohio, Lola Albright moved to Hollywood in the mid-1940s. Considered one of the most stylish, sultriest and and beautiful actresses in Hollywood, with one of the throatiest, smokiest and most distinctive voices in the business, she starred with Kirk Douglas (I) in the 1949 hit Champion (1949). From 1958 to 1961 she played nightclub singer Edie Hart in the popular TV series "Peter Gunn" (1958). She also made TV guest appearances on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (1955), "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." (1964) and "Airwolf" (1984). She played Constance McKenzie in the night-time soap opera "Peyton Place" (1964) after Dorothy Malone became ill and could no longer play the role. Lola received critical acclaim for her performances in A Cold Wind in August (1961), Joy House (1992) and How I Spent My Summer Vacation (1967) (TV).
TRIVIA:
- Inherited her singing talents from her parents, both evangelistic singers; started in films as an MGM singing extra, in _The Pirate (1948)_ (qv), _Easter Parade (1948)_ (qv) and _The Unfinished Dance (1947)_ (qv).
- Married second husband, pianist 'Bill Chadney' (qv), at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas.
- Her popularity as sultry, dusky-voiced nightclub singer Edie Hart on TV's _"Peter Gunn" (1958)_ (qv) series inspired two record albums, "Lola Wants You" and Dreamsville".
- Won the "Best Actress" Award (Silver Bear) at the Berlin Film Festival in 1966 for _Lord Love a Duck (1966)_ (qv); there was a controversy because some members of the jury wanted to cite the three female leads of the movie (Albright, 'Tuesday Weld' (qv) and 'Ruth Gordon (I)' (qv)), but other members felt that to give a "joint" award would diminish the award's significance. (In 2006, for example, the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival went to the female "cast" of _Volver (2006/I)_ (qv), rather than just to 'Penélope Cruz' (qv)).
