Started out as a child actor in silent films, most notably appearing in 'D.W. Griffith' (qv)'s _Orphans of the Storm (1921)_ (qv).
His famous radio character, Senator Beauregard Claghorn, was the inspiration for the Warner Brothers cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn.
Portrayed Senator Beauregard Claghorn and also was the announcer for NBC Radio's "The Fred Allen Show" (1945-1949).

He was best known as the blustery Southern politician Sen. Beauregard Claghorn ("That's a joke, son!") on 'Fred Allen (I)' (qv)'s radio program in the 1940s.
