A 1984 diary entry by 'Alan Bennett (I)' (qv) (scriptwriter of _A Private Function (1984)_ (qv)) mentions Carter amusing himself on the set between takes by doing conjuring tricks. In the finished film he performs a magic trick as Inspector Noble, and in _Shakespeare in Love (1998)_ (qv) can be seen juggling.
Was a member of the "Madhouse Company of London", a comedy troupe which performed in Boston in the 1970s. Other members were Marcel Steiner, Marc Weil and Tommy Shands. 'Ken Campbell (I)' (qv), who appears in _A Fish Called Wanda (1988)_ (qv) as George Thomason's lawyer was also associated with the troupe.
