BIOGRAPHY:

Carter was born in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England. His father worked for the Air Ministry and his mother was a land girl and later a school secretary. Carter attended the University of Sussex to study law, but dropped out after two years to join a fringe theatre group in Brighton.

Carter is married to English actress Imelda Staunton, with whom he has a daughter named Bessie born in 1993. He is also currently the chairman of Hampstead Cricket club.


TRIVIA:
  • A 1984 diary entry by 'Alan Bennett (I)' (qv) (scriptwriter of _A Private Function (1984)_ (qv)) mentions Carter amusing himself on the set between takes by doing conjuring tricks. In the finished film he performs a magic trick as Inspector Noble, and in _Shakespeare in Love (1998)_ (qv) can be seen juggling.
  • Daughter, Bessie, born in 1993
  • Was a member of the "Madhouse Company of London", a comedy troupe which performed in Boston in the 1970s. Other members were Marcel Steiner, Marc Weil and Tommy Shands. 'Ken Campbell (I)' (qv), who appears in _A Fish Called Wanda (1988)_ (qv) as George Thomason's lawyer was also associated with the troupe.
