BIOGRAPHY: One of the top students in Joel Hodgson's class on "Stand Up and Smartology," Josh Weinstein eagerly stepped aboard when Joel asked him to participate in his TV series "Mystery Science Theater 3000" (1988). Weinstein portrayed the laconic robot Tom Servo, as well as the nerdy henchman Dr. Lawrence Erhardt. However, being a teenager led to friction with his older cast members, which were exacerbated when the series went to national television. Weinstein had loved the easygoing, improvisation friendly atmosphere of a local show and hated having to read other people's material all the time. He left the show after that first season.
Since quitting MST3k, he has chosen the professional name J. Elvis Weinstein after many fans mistook the Simpsons writer Josh Weinstein for him. He has had a steady behind the camera career, producing and writing shows like Freaks and Geeks, America's Funniest Home Videos, and My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star.
TRIVIA:
- In addition to being the original Tom Servo, he was also the original Gypsy. 'Jim Mallon' (qv) took over the part when he left and Mallon was later replaced by 'Patrick Brantseg' (qv).
- Was only 18 years old when he quit working on MST3K (_"Mystery Science Theater 3000" (1988)_ (qv)).
- The fate of his MST3K (_"Mystery Science Theater 3000" (1988)_ (qv)) character, Dr. Laurence Erhardt, generally referred to as Dr. Larry, was never revealed. When Joel Robinson ('Joel Hodgson' (qv)) asked the new henchman, TV's Frank ('Frank Conniff (I)' (qv)) where Larry was, Frank simply held up a milk carton with a picture of Larry captioned 'Have you seen this man?' and Frank answered "He's missing." Erhardt was mentioned only once more in the entire series (in a joking allusion to the similar appearance of a character in "Earth vs. the Spider").
- Was the original Tom Servo on MST3K (_"Mystery Science Theater 3000" (1988)_ (qv)). 'Kevin Murphy (II)' (qv) replaced him at the beginning of the second season. His nerdy henchman character, Dr. Laurence Erhardt, was replaced by TV's Frank, played by 'Frank Conniff' (wv). He differentiated Dr. Laurence Erhardt and Tom Servo by using a squeaky, high pitched voice as Erhardt and a deep voice as Servo.
