BIOGRAPHY: Born Leeds, England and trained at Old Vic Theatre School, 1947-1949. First stage appearance in "Tough at the Top" (C.B. Cochran's last musical) in 1949, followed by seasons at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon; Glasgow Citizen's and Birmingham Repertory Theatre. First in London's west end in "The Happy Time" (1952) and more recently in "Worzel Gummidge", "A Month of Sundays" "Maria" and "Unfinished Business". Overseas: played Caesar in "Caesar and Cleopatra" (International Festival, Paris, 1956); Ravinia Shakespeare Festival (Chicago, 1964); Pickering in "My Fair Lady" (Houston, 1991). In 1998 he was nominated as "Best Actor" for the Royal Midland Television Awards for his role as Alby James in an episode of "Peak Practice" (1993).
TRIVIA:
- Served in the Royal Air Force prior to training to be an actor.
- Played the Doctor in two Doctor Who Unbound audio plays, "Auld Mortality" (2003) and "A Storm Of Angels" (2005).
- Has said in an interview he was offered the role of the first Doctor Who (played by William Hartnell)
- Was asked to play the cameo role of The Mathematican(Leslie French) in Doctor Who: Silver Nemesis.
- Appeared as a butler in the rock and roll movie "Born to Boogie" featuring Marc Bolan, T. Rex, and directed by Ringo Starr
- He was offered but turned down the roles of both the First Doctor and the Second Doctor in _"Doctor Who" (1963)_ (qv), which ultimately went to 'William Hartnell' (qv) and 'Patrick Troughton' (qv) respectively.
- At the age of 80 in 2004, he became the oldest actor to ever play the _"Doctor Who" (1963)_ (qv) character the Doctor, which he did (for the second time) in the Big Finish audio drama "A Storm of Angels". He is also the only homosexual actor to play the role.
