BIOGRAPHY: David Warner once described his childhood as "messy". His father changed jobs often and moved from town to town. David attended eight schools and "failed his exams at all of them". His parents separated when he was a teenager and he only saw his mother again seven years later - on her deathbed. After a series of odd jobs, he was accepted at the Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts (RADA) where he was very unhappy. After RADA, he became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and got the part of Blifil in Tom Jones (1963). With the title role in Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment (1966) and a two-year stint as Hamlet with the RSC, Warner became a star at 24.
TRIVIA:
- By appearing in Batman: The Animated Series (_"Batman" (1992)_ (qv)), he became the first actor to play the villain Ra's-Al-Ghul. To date, he has been succeeded only by 'Ken Watanabe (I)' (qv) and 'Liam Neeson' (qv).
- In _Time After Time (1979)_ (qv), he played John Leslie Stevenson (Jack the Ripper). In _"The Outer Limits" (1995)_ (qv) episode "Ripper", he played Inspector Langford who was investigating Dr. Jack York ('Cary Elwes' (qv)) who was suspected of being Jack the Ripper.
- Has played at least three different species in the Star Trek universe: a human in _Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)_ (qv); a Klingon in _Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)_ (qv) and a Cardassian in _"Star Trek: The Next Generation" (1987)_ (qv).
- Although he played Reinhard Heydrich, one of the key architects of the Holocaust, in both _"Holocaust" (1978)_ (qv) and _Hitler's S.S.: Portrait in Evil (1985) (TV)_ (qv), he is Jewish in real life.
- Has appeared in three different films involving time travel: _Time After Time (1979)_ (qv); _Time Bandits (1981)_ (qv) and _Planet of the Apes (2001)_ (qv).
- Has vertigo. Was doubled in _Time Bandits (1981)_ (qv) in the scene where the Evil Genius walks up the steps after caging the bandits, because he could not handle the drop below him.
- David Warner's limp in _Straw Dogs (1971)_ (qv) was real. He had smashed both his heels in a fall sometime before filming began and it was a long time before he could walk normally again. Warner's name is not in the credits because, for his career's sake, he didn't want people to know about his problem. It was not for insurance reasons as it has been often written.
- He has two roles in common with both 'David Collings' (qv) and 'Richard E. Grant' (qv). All three have played Bob Cratchit - Warner in _A Christmas Carol (1984) (TV)_ (qv), Collings in _Scrooge (1970)_ (qv) and Grant in _A Christmas Carol (1999) (TV)_ (qv) - and the Doctor from _"Doctor Who" (1963)_ (qv) - Warner in the Big Finish audio dramas "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Masters of War", Collings in the Big Finish audio drama "Full Fathom Five" and Grant in _Comic Relief: Doctor Who - The Curse of Fatal Death (1999) (TV)_ (qv) and _"Doctor Who: Scream of the Shalka" (2003)_ (qv).
